CARLTON MID T20 LEAGUE (ROUND 6) PREVIEW
Palmerston v Nightcliff at DXC Arena 1 (Tuesday, 6pm)
On paper, this may look like a nondescript fixture due to Palmerston being 0-2 and out of T20 finals contention, but there's more than one way to skin a cat if you look a little deeper here. Nightcliff are currently second in Pool A, a win tonight will draw them level with Southern Districts but they will need a big win over the Power to overhaul the current deficit of +1.02 to finish in pole position. PINT will be watching on from their training/vantage point at Marrara to see who their potential opponent will be should the Northern Territory upset a rampaging Waratah in 48 hours or so. Palmy also have a Casuarina AllSports Club One-Day semi on Saturday, so a good opportunity for their firing batting line-up to gain even more confidence before a sudden death clash with the Warriors at The Gardens.
DEAD RUBBER? NO CHANCE
Even though Palmerston have nothing but pride on the line tonight as they cannot progress irrespective of tonight's result; they will be out with a vengence to upset the unbeaten Tigers and give their own confidence a boost ahead of the aforementioned clash with Tahs on Saturday. Nightcliff will be viewing this game differently; they need to win and win well to finish on top of their pool to take on either PINT or Waratah in a mid-June semi. The yellow and black have brought in ACT signing Tyler van Luin for his first outing of 2024, which strengthens their near impenetrable order even further. The thing working against them is their lack of batting time in this format due to a small chase against Tracy Village and an abandoned fixture (due to a dangerous wicket) at Gardens Oval a fortnight ago. Palmy will know if they can make some breakthroughs there will be some rust and match practice to potentially exploit.
DXC SPINNING LIKE A TOP
DXC Arena has held together well considering the number of matches it has hosted to date, avid watchers have noticed more grass and a greyish hue throughout the surface over the last fortnight or so. Spin has been economical and at the same time dangerous under lights with the decent grass coverage, so the Power will be mindful of Charlie Smith's legspin (12 wickets at 21.25 in the One-Day competition) and the tall point of difference Andrew Richards (2/16 off 4 in his only T20 outing at DXC to date) and his offies provide. In comparison, young legspinner Jayden Chatto has impressed in his T20 opportunities as the Power continue to invest in and develop their youth, captain Hamish Martin is one of the premier spinners in the NT and probably won't bowl as they have Rommel Shahzad in decent form to bowl four overs.
BAT BIG AND LARGE
Palmerston have included DCN&S R7 Player of the Round (surprise, surprise) Aidan Firman, fresh off a blistering 130 off 87 balls on Saturday to open with Caleb Montague (92) as part of a dangerous top order. Alex Bleakley is out and Jake Baker returns from B Grade to slot into the middle order alongside Martin and potentially lead quick Matt Scoble as a pinch hitter. On the other side of the fence, Tigers captain Michael Kudra (167 runs at 83.5 in 50-over cricket), Connor Carroll (338 at 56.33), Douwtjie Hoogenboezem (286 at 47.67) and the electric Mansukh Singh (298 at 59.6, including 195 v Tracy) pose the biggest batting threat in the competition. Expect Nightcliff to attempt to assert dominance early through aggression to set the game up for a significant NRR boost, whereas Palmerston will be extremely keen to inflict some mental baggage on the Tigers as a potential One-Day Final opponent if things go well for both sides this Saturday.
PREDICTION: Nightcliff. Should be too strong with their batting line-up, however, if Palmerston take more than three wickets inside the first 10 overs it should be a tight contest. Spin should play a part too, and both teams have quality quicks to supplement the tweakers on a dry DXC surface. Looking forward to this one.
